Karratha is a city in Western Australia located in the Pilbara region adjoining the port of Dampier. Since you have decided to come here, we put together a perfect bucket list of things to do in Karratha. Let’s start your adventure!
Things To Do
The visitors centre is a good place to start when planning things to do in Karratha. It’s a perfect place to book adventures, get general information, purchase packages, etc. Here we give you intensive information talked about at the Karratha visitors centre regarding the various activities you will find available.
The Amazing National Parks in Karratha in the Pilbara region have lovely things to offer. For example untouched wilderness areas, ancient landscapes, rugged ranges, and beautiful gorges. The beaches are pristine and sandy with untouched islands and reefs. You will also find that this region is filled with birds, all sorts of wildlife and plant species unique to this planet.
Karijini National Park is another example the beauty Mother Nature has blessed Australia with amongst other things. Karijini is the second largest national park in Western Australia. An impressive aspect of this park is it is completely split into a northern half and a southern half by a corridor, which is the Hamersley & Robe River railway as well as the Marandoo iron ore mine. This park is famous for its gorges, slot canyons, water holes, and waterfalls. Bring your bathing suit and escape from the heat in these cold pools of water!
Karijini National Park is home to wildlife such as euros, red kangaroos, wallaroos, geckos, echidnas, goannas, bats, and legless lizards. You will also find a vast number of birds, snakes, and pythons.
Hearson’s Cove is an excellent example of the beautiful beaches located on the Burrup Peninsula, which is between Karratha and Dampier. The sheltered cove is famous for its beauty and makes a perfect picnic and swimming spot all year round. Be sure to explore and enjoy the tidal flats where you may discover mud crabs, turtles, octopus, and migrating seasonal bird life.
A lovely thing about Hearson’s Cove is it’s one of the few locations where you can see one of our natural wonders, The Staircase to the Moon. This phenomenon only occurs in Western Australia when the full moon rises over exposed mudflats during extremely low tide. This combination creates a magical optical illusion. The illusion is one of a staircase reaching all the way to the full moon. What an incredible place to enjoy this natural phenomenon.
Point Samson is a 41-minute drive from Karratha and worth a visit. It boasts beautiful beaches at Honeymoon Cove and John’s Creek and is a lovely place for a BBQ or picnic because they have areas of grass made just for this alongside the beach. You can also fish from the shore or get on a boat and do some deep-sea fishing if fishing is your thing. There is nothing like fresh Australian fish done on the BBQ! If you are a food and beach person, Point Samson is the perfect place for you.
Looking for more of Australia’s clear blue waters and fantastic scenery? Check out Pilbara Coast, which is centred around the towns of Roebourne and Karratha. You will find excellent fishing, swimming, sunsets and also be able to see the Staircase to the Moon from here.
Heritage Trail is another must-see during your visit to Karratha. The trail is an ingenious footpath network, which give you a way to walk to several of Karratha’s essential locations. You can walk, run, cycle, whatever mode of physical transportation you choose on this beautiful trail.
